We must get this request about once a week: "Where can I find a QuickTime movie of the famous first Macintosh commercial @md the one called '1984' that aired during the 1984 Super Bowl?"
Well, Apple wouldn't let us include it on the CD-ROM that comes with this book. Strangely, though, it is available for free if you have an Internet account. Try this address between 8 PM and 6 AM, Central Time:
ftp://csc.ucs.uwplatt.edu/QuickTime/1984/
Two cautions: first, while the stuff is there as we write this, it may not be there when you check; the Internet is like that. And second, it's a long commercial — it's a big QuickTime file, too: 14 megabytes, split into five StuffIt segments.
This same site has other popular QuickTime movies, such as Saturday Night Live's "Newton Post-It Notes" commercial satire.
Our Tech Editor adds: This is definitely a copyright violation (not just of Apple; the performers & musicians probably just sold TV commercial rights) and will likely go away shortly after you publish, if not before.
